Professional Biography

I received a B.A. in English language and literature and an M.A. in linguistics from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea. I received my doctoral degree in linguistics from Georgetown University in 2015. At Georgetown University, I studied under the direction of Dr. Donna Lardiere, who is renowned for her research on the second language acquisition of formal aspects of language knowledge. My dissertation, entitled L2 acquisition of number marking: a bidirectional study of adult learners of Korean and Indonesian, examined the second language (L2) acquisition of plural forms and classifiers in Korean and Indonesian.

I first started teaching Korean language classes at Georgetown University’s Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. There, I taught drill sessions for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of Korean language classes. I also taught beginner level 1 and 2 classes at the King Sejong Institute at the Korean Cultural Center in Washington, DC. Additionally, I was a Lecturer in the Korean Language Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of East Asian and Languages and Civilizations from 2015-2017.

I have been teaching Korean language at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill since 2017.

My current research focuses on Korean language pedagogy, linguistic approaches to L2 acquisition, and heritage language acquisition.
