Digital Humanities and Data Science in Asian Studies
Digitization is transforming the way we engage with humanities and social sciences. Recent developments in the field of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, such as the compilation of large-scale digital databases of primary and secondary sources, have enabled students and researchers to incorporate novel analytical methods (e.g., machine learning, topic modeling, artificial intelligence) and advanced data visualization techniques in their study of past and present cultures and societies. Data Science/Digital Humanities is a new, interdisciplinary academic area that expands and deepens ways of learning and teaching about Asia and the Middle East through active engagement with data-oriented technologies that have deeply penetrated and reshaped our lived realities. The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies offers courses that incorporate data science and digital humanities components.
