I recently interviewed Dr. Kyoungjin Bae, one of the newest faculty members here in DAMES! Read on to find out more about her!
Q: Can you tell us about yourself and your areas of study?
I am a historian of early modern (also called late imperial) China with research interests in the history of technology, early modern crafts and material culture, and the transnational history of empires. I am currently writing a book on Cantonese woodworkers’ knowledge and practices in three commercially and politically connected cities during the 18th and 19th centuries – Guangzhou, Beijing, and Calcutta.
Q: What made you choose UNC and DAMES as the next step on your teaching and academic journey?
DAMES’ interdisciplinary scholarship and pedagogy and its wide geographical breath are great for my own research and teaching approaches.
Q: Do you have any hobbies or special interests?
I love watching Asian dramas, and recently I am deeply into Chinese costume dramas. I also like to try new and different restaurants.
Q: What about being in the Triangle area excites or interests you the most?
The networks, linkages, and diversity that the Triangle can offer in my academic, cultural, and savory life!
