In this section of “History and Culture of Music,” we will discuss the study lives of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African diasporic communities in the Americas and Europe. Some topics for discussion will be: race and racism, religion, conflicting views on tradition and heritage, musical experimentalism, intersectionality, and music philosophy. Several times during the semester, we will welcome guest musicians to class to speak about those topics, their musical practice, and their professional careers.
