This course is a wide-ranging introduction to the literary, cultural, and intellectual history of the peoples of South Asia, a region that includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Familiarity with the languages, history, and culture of South Asia is neither required nor assumed. In this course we will engage with poetry, fiction, films, architecture, music, painting, and other works that were composed at key moments in the history of South Asia. Readings will include the Upanishads, Ramayana, the Bhagavad gita, as well as works by Amir Khusrau, Mirabai, Kabir, Dara Shikoh, Mir Taqi Mir, Gandhi, Nehru, Iqbal, and Manto. LA, BN. WB.
