This course offers training in Chinese-English translation (written) and interpretation (oral). It is designed for second language learners of Chinese, who have completed at least three years of formal study of Chinese, to practice translation skills while improving their Chinese language proficiency in general. Students whose first language is Chinese cannot take this course. Students are expected to have basic background knowledge of English and Chinese grammar before taking this course. The teaching materials (in English) introduce major concepts and terminology, major differences between English and Chinese, and translation techniques. The bulk of the course is training in translation/interpretation skills in a variety of genres and fields, including conversation, informative and culture-bound texts, business, law and medicine. Students work both individually and in groups on oral interpretation tasks and written translation assignments. The course is taught in Chinese (whenever possible) and English.
