ARAB 443: Dissident Voices in Arab Cultures
This seminar explores the works of authors, whose alternative interpretations of Arab history, culture, and identity contest the Arabic literary canon and challenge our understanding of contemporary Arab cultures. Specifically, how do Arab authors conceive of their identity in exile or at home? How are women, queer, and minority authors intervening in the contemporary Arab cultural discourse? How do they articulate their critique of mainstream literary and cinematic genres? And how is their dissent expressed aesthetically in short stories, novels, documentaries, and films? LA, BN.
