We are pleased to invite submissions for the 40th Annual Conference of the Southeastern Association of Teachers of Japanese centered around the dynamic intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). This year’s theme, Innovative Horizons in Japanese Language Education: Embracing AI, DEI, and Global Collaboration,” aims to explore how these emerging trends and methodologies are transforming the landscape of language education and fostering a more inclusive and interconnected global community.

Conference Topics

We welcome papers that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Artificial Intelligence in Language Learning: Innovative applications of AI in teaching, learning, and assessment of Japanese language skills.
  • DEI in Language Education: Strategies and case studies for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in Japanese language classrooms, curricula, and institutional policies.
  • COIL in Language Teaching: The impact of COIL programs on Japanese language education, including collaborative projects, intercultural communication, and global partnerships.
  • Intersection of AI, DEI, and COIL: How these elements can be integrated to create more effective and inclusive language learning environments.
  • Future Directions: Emerging trends and prospects for AI, DEI, and COIL in Japanese language education.

In addition to session proposals that are related to the conference theme, we welcome proposals on any topic related to Japanese language and teaching (pedagogy, classroom activities, assessment, instructional technology, second language acquisition, linguistics, literature and film, heritage language learners, K-12 issues in teaching Japanese, etc.).

Submission Guidelines

SEATJ is an organization serving all levels of Japanese teachers, and we welcome proposals from K-12 educators as well as instructors and graduate students at institutes of higher education, including both native and non-native speakers of Japanese.

Proposals are for 30-minute sessions (20-minute presentation + 10-minute Q & A), and presentations can be in either English or Japanese. Please submit your proposals by 11:59 pm December 15, 2024.

Proposals should not exceed 250 words in English or 500 characters in Japanese.

Please write the abstract in the language you intend to use for your presentation. Notification of acceptance will be sent via email by January 7, 2025. Papers will be published in the conference proceedings on the SEATJ website in Fall 2025.
