ASIA 61: India through the Lens of Master Filmmakers
In this course, we watch films by some of the most acclaimed directors working in various languages and regions of India, as well as the Indian diaspora. Our cinematic journey will touch on important themes in South Asian culture and history over the past 200 years. It will also introduce students to some of the formal elements of filmmaking to help them better “read” and appreciate the text of film. There will be weekly film screenings and related readings on Indian cinema, culture, and film theory. For the Communication-Intensive component of this course, students will receive feedback on a piece of their writing and be asked to revise and resubmit it. They will also be given opportunities to speak on assigned topics in class. VP, BN, CI.
