Arabic 151 introduces students to the rich literary heritage of the Arabic language.  With units on the golden odes of Pre-Islamic Arabia, poetic innovations, wisdom tale cycles, and fantastical narratives of the medieval period, as well as modern Arab poetry and fiction addressing themes related to the environment, diaspora, the Iraq wars, and Palestine, the course touches on a range of canonical texts and contemporary themes. We will place particular emphasis on finding connections between our readings and on understanding their particular place within the social and historical contexts in which they were created, as well as their relevance to readers today.
