Ms. Luceil Friedman
Professional Biography
Luceil Friedman obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Hebraic Studies from Douglass College, Rutgers University and her Master of Arts in Near Eastern Languages and Literatures from Indiana University where she was an Associate Instructor. Her major area of studies was Hebrew Language and Literature with a minor in Classical Aramaic. She attended the Hebrew University School of Education, Jerusalem, Israel for graduate studies in Education including courses on teaching Hebrew as a foreign language.
During decades of teaching Hebrew to English speaking students she also served on the College Board SAT II
Hebrew Achievement Test committee where she was engaged in creating the testing materials.
Ms Friedman was recruited to start a new program in Modern Hebrew language at UNC in 2003.
The program grew, and when her students completing 4 semesters were desirous
of continuing, she taught Advanced Hebrew on her own time until the course was approved the following year.
As a year end project, the students produced the first all Hebrew speaking play on campus.
Ms Friedman later was successful in petitioning for Hebrew to be offered as a minor.
After her retirement, she served for ten years as volunteer faculty advisor for the UNC campus group Christians United for Israel.
