Caroline Williams, a member of the first cohort of the DAMES graduate program, successfully defended her master’s thesis last month, the title of which is The Geo-Gendered Contradiction of U.S. Counterterrorism and Counterinsurgency Policies in the Middle East. All of here at DAMES are so, so proud of Caroline: she is our first grad student to defend her thesis, and to say she is very special to us is to say far too little.

Of her project, Caroline writes:
My thesis explores counterterrorism as being conventionally masculinized and counterinsurgency as feminized according to their tactics and targeting. I analyze these policies as contradictory to each other despite their parallel usage in regional communities and their long-term anti-terrorist objectives.
