In this course, we will examine works written by Middle Eastern women. Since no text is divorced from the historical, cultural, social, political and economic context in which it is created, we will also explore the literary texts inside those contexts. In order to familiarize ourselves with these aspects of the Middle East, we will be reading various secondary materials. We will begin with reading speeches and short stories written by women since 1860s. We will discuss the conception of Middle Eastern and Islamic feminism, and the problematics of examining and studying Middle Eastern women within a Western academic discourse. Our discussion will focus on Middle Eastern women and feminism; Middle Eastern women and the West; women, nation, and nationalism; women and colonialism; women and patriarchy; women and sexuality; and women and religion. All readings are in English.
