ASIA 150 is an introductory course on Asian cultures, histories, societies, and languages. Our studies will include four subregions: East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. Today, Asia is home to 60% of the world’s total population and is a region within which more than 2,000 languages are spoken. This class will overview some of the large, regional structures and flows that connect its diverse peoples and cultures. It will also consider topics such as colonialism, nationalism, modernity, and globalization within particular Asian contexts. Various instructors from the Department of Asian Studies and other departments at UNC will be invited to our class to share their scholarly expertise on various topics related to Asia. These guest lectures provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with the wide range of classes on Asia offered at the university. It is hoped that these encounters will inspire students to take additional classes on Asia and to take advantage of study abroad in Asia. SS, BN, GL.
